Go back to sleep.

Pan: Part I

“Go back to sleep.”

Peter always said that when he was about to leave. It was almost five in the morning, and she felt the fatigue coursing through her body. She knew he needed to leave. He needed to leave every night before the sun came up to not disturb her roommates. She also knew that she needed to sleep at least an hour or so to feel just a bit human and alive.

“I’ll see you tomorrow night then, yeah?” Wendy said quietly, her eyelids fluttering and fighting the urge to close completely. She wanted to remember everything about him, every detail as memorable as the next.

He nodded. There was a certain emotion in his eyes that she couldn’t place.  “Seeing you is my favorite part of the day.”

“That’s cheesy,” she giggled, the lack of sleep making her a bit delirious.

“It’s true!” he exclaimed, his eyes widening with the grin plastered on his face. “It’s getting so complicated over at the house; I don’t know what I’m going to do with them anymore.”

Wendy frowned. “You’ll figure it out, you always do.” Peter smiled at her. “Can you stay with me until I fall asleep?” she asked.

“Is that even a question?” Wendy scooted over in her bed, where she felt cozy under the layers of blankets on this chilly December morning. Peter lied down on top of the blankets next to her, sharing Wendy’s pillow and resting his head on his propped-up arm.

Turning on her side to face him, Wendy began to drift off. His thumb grazed her cheek softly, a smile on his lips.

“Go back to sleep.”
